Traditions and Heritatge
Orkney has gained an enviable reputation for the quality of its produce. It’s not just for meat - fine whisky, seafood, wine, cheese, preserves, confectionery and ice cream have all made their mark and proudly command retail space and menu listings throughout the UK and overseas. |
Why does this ancient archipelago off the far north of Scotland achieve such success in the marketplace?
To start, it has a firm foundation: rich fertile land, fresh sea air and a temperate climate. Added to that, is the generation after generation of farming (and fishing) families that have embraced its traditional values and retained the processes which maintain quality over quantity. In Orkney Meat’s case, this means that their beef and lamb is carefully matured and finished following traditional methods by families that have developed and refined the art of traditional livestock farming with a high level of care, respect and affection that is all too rare in the modern world. That tradition is juxtaposed with a modern, fully EU approved, multi-species meat complex, which was originally built in 1980 and underwent a major refurbishment in 2003. It now boasts state-of-the-art facilities and equipment including a purpose-built lairage to ensure that every care is taken to protect the product and comply with strict health and safety standards.
